Alauda gulgula

Alauda gulgula

Formal Name :Alauda gulgula
Other Name(s) :Skylark
Length : 14 cm
Photo spot :Tamhai New Town
The head is yellowish brown with black vertical stripes; the feathers at the back of the head are long and erect. The back is brown with dark brown stripes and light green wings, the spots on the brow are yellowish white; the ear feathers are chestnut brown with black vertical stripes. They usually appear at ground surface in the open spaces like open meadows, dry farmlands, and mountains. They can fly vertically up to 20-30 meters. They often flutter their wings and sing in the air.
They nest in wetlands and lay 2-6 eggs on the ground. Their eggs are white with spots. The female is mostly, or solely, responsible for hatching. The hatch period does not exceed 11-12 days. The new-born birds will be fed by parents for 10-12 days before leaving the nest. This short-timed reproduction and breeding process may be due to the fact that they are vulnerable to enemies when they are on the ground. Therefore, they usually reproduce more than 2 times in a season.
