

Dr. George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901)
Dr. George Leslie Mackay is a Canadian missionary who arrived in Tamsui in 1872. He established numerous churches and introduced western medicine to Taiwan. He also established clinics offering free service to the people. Mackay also founded Oxford College, Tamsui Women’s College, and used modernized education to enlighten the people and the social climate. In general, Dr. Mackay had a great impact on the modernization of Taiwan. He loved Taiwan, married a Wugu native, Chang Chung-ming, and was buried in Tamsui.
