Caprimulgus affinis

Caprimulgus affinis
Formal Name : Caprimulgus affinis
Other Name(s) : Savanna Nightjar, Taiwan Nightjar
Length : 25 cm
Photo spot : Tamhai New Town
The Taiwan Nightjar is a rare habitant bird in Taiwan. The colors and patterns of its feathers are protective in nature. It is mostly grey-brown on the back with dark-brown and yellow brown stripes. White spots can be seen on the outside of the primaries, the belly is mostly yellowish brown with some dark brown horizontal stripes; the tail feathers of the male birds are white on the outside.
The Nightjar is a fascinating type of bird. They will come out in the midsummer night under bright moonlight. Their clear and rapid chirps resonate in the quiet forest. The moonlit mountain wood and meadow in the midsummer night would not be perfect without the chirping of the nightjar, which is a beautiful sound that will remain in people's mind.
Currently, there are still some Taiwan Nightjars inhabiting the open fields and areas near streams. They are the most mysterious bird in Tamsui.
