They are called the Five Color Bird of Taiwan for the five colors on their body. Their beautiful feathers are mainly green in hue, mixed with other colors like yellow, red, blue and black. They belong to a Taiwan endemic sub-species and are a common habitant bird in Taiwan.
Their staples are fruits and berries. The fruits of Ficus caulocarpa are their main staple, but they also eat insects. They nest in tall withered tree trunk, mainly withered camphor tree trunks. Their powerful beaks can peck a circular entrance on the trunk for them to nest inside.
The difference between muller's barbets and other small birds is that they must sleep at night inside the tree hole. When they sleep in the hole, they will stick their belly closely to the tree hole. Therefore in woods where Muller's Barbets inhabit, people can easily find the holes they pecked, which are not only for reproduction but also for rest. Muller's Barbets can be found in the woods of Tamsui.
